Histoire des éditions Cêtre

It all began with Louis Cêtre, a native of Besançon (1913-1985). In 1942, he bought the Alexandre bookshop at 14 Grande Rue in Besançon, which then became the Cêtre bookshop. In 1973, Louis Cêtre created the prize for the best Comtois book. This initiative soon led to the publication of Comtois books in 1975. The first book published in the last quarter of 1975 was Le Temps des croquants by François Girod, a historian and academic. It had a print run of 4,000 copies, with a printed dedication by the author: "To the Comtois, to all those who love their country through its provinces and the novel through history; for the third centenary of the conquest of Franche-Comté (1674-1774)". With a reproduction of a map of the County of Burgundy and Franche-Comté dating from 1708, folded and inserted into the book (size 39cm x 53cm), this first book was a great success! Louis Cêtre began this new activity in regional publishing with his son Marcel Cêtre, who continued it until 2001. At the initiative of the Collectif Histoire des Chaprais, associations working in the field of local history and heritage will collectively celebrate 50 years of publishing in the specific fields of history and heritage.
