Château médiéval de Montfaucon

Perched at an altitude of 615 metres, the Château de Montfaucon still stands proudly, despite the wear and tear of time, on a narrow rocky promontory overlooking the Doubs. Built in the second half of the 13th century, at the point where the valley narrows, it once offered an unobstructed view of the routes taken by people and goods along the river, upstream from the prosperous city of Besançon.

For over 40 years, volunteers from the "Le Château de Montfaucon" association have been working to maintain this site, a veritable paradise for walkers, joggers and other lovers of nature, geology and history. The aim of the association is to maintain a pleasant, safe site, to consolidate the structures that still exist, and to make the historical archives of this place 'speak', in order to pass on this heritage and its history to future generations.

Remains of Montfaucon castle. Free access. You must park your car near the Montfaucon reception hall, then allow 15 to 30 minutes on foot (the Chemin du Donjon is closed to vehicles unless authorised by the Mairie). Guided tours are available throughout the year, subject to prior booking. Tours start at the bottom of the castle. Guided tours for groups are available on request (1.5 to 2 hours guided tours in French).
