Throughout the 18th century, Besançon underwent unprecedented urban transformations in line with the political, economic and social context of its attachment to France.
The desire to embellish the town, which was reflected in the numerous architectural competitions organised by the Academy of Sciences and Belles Lettres of Besançon and the desire of owners to redo the facades of their houses, should not obscure another reality: that of a town deeply marked by rurality.
The presence of vines in the town, although less important than in previous centuries, as well as the numerous vegetable gardens behind the courtyards and the presence of chicken coops, stables and barns at the back of the plots, testify to the desire of the people of Besançon to have at hand something to feed themselves.
This walk through the city allows us to rediscover Besançon from the perspective of the countryside in the city.
Prices: 8€ -6€ for students, under 18s, members of the Tourist Office (on presentation of a card), disabled persons. Free for under 12s and jobseekers.
