Gustave Courbet, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Louis Pasteur - the nation's elite in the 19th century attended this noble institution, whose origins date back to the 16th century.
In 1597, at the request of the town council, the Jesuits took charge of the municipal college, which they managed brilliantly until their expulsion in 1765.
After the Jesuits left, the college became the Collège Saint Louis, but it ceased to operate for a short period, housing a National Workshop and then an arms factory. Teaching resumed in 1796 and the institution, successively known as the Ecole Centrale, the Lycée Impérial and the Collège Royal, continued its educational mission.
