Take on Besançon's fortifications. After the conquest of Franche-Comté under Louis XIV, Vauban transformed the town into a stronghold. He built the Citadelle, now considered to be one of the most beautiful in France, and innovated by adding bastioned towers to the ramparts. The engineer's work has been recognised by UNESCO in 2008.
