LES 24H DU TEMPS

The exhibition, « Montres et Merveilles » (« Watches and Wonders ») aims at meeting the expectations of the general public, and, more broadly, those of horological enthusiasts and of lovers and specialists of old precious watches. It is also the expression of the principal horological purpose of the Museum. The exhibition, which will be displayed on the top floor of the Museum – under the wood-work of the roof of the Granvelle Palace – will exhibit a selection of about 200 pieces, mainly watches, but also cases, enamelled plates, horological tools and iconographic documents. The chronological pattern of the exhibition illustrates the major evolutions of the mechanical watch, from the sixteenth up to the twentieth centuries, in its both mechanical and aesthetic aspects. The exhibition recounts the history and the symbolic value of the watch, from the quest for precision to its social symbolism. Special attention is given to the part played by Besançon within the framework of French horological craftsmanship through an explanation of the production context of the time.
