Behind its walls, the Citadel houses the Natural History Museum of Besançon, a unique and unexpected attraction in this unusual setting. It adopts an unconventional approach with mounted collections exhibited alongside a highly diverse range of living animals. They complement each other, illustrating the complexity of the living world and the uses that can be made of it.
Here you can discover a huge variety of animal species demonstrating the biodiversity of all the continents. Nowhere else in France is it possible to see mammals (primates, carnivores, herbivores, nocturnal rodents, etc.), birds, insects, amphibians and fish all in the same place !
The species are exhibited in six different areas: the Zoo (Jardin zoologique), Farm (P’tite ferme), Insectarium, Aquarium, Noctarium and Evolution Trail (Parcours de l’évolution).
