Festival international de musique Besançon Franche-Comté

75th Festival in September 2022!

Created in 1948, the Besançon Franche-Comté International Music Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious music festivals in France. Initiated by Gaston Poulet, a French violinist and conductor, it is the third music festival created in France, after Strasbourg and Aix-en-Provence.
Open to recitals and chamber music, it is however the symphonic repertoire that has most marked its history, with the greatest names in conducting: André Cluytens, Carl Schuricht, Igor Markevitch, Rafael Kubelik, Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit…

The Festival’s image was reinforced in 1951 with the creation of the International Competition for Young Conductors, which quickly became the most prestigious event of its kind. Their prizes in Besançon have enabled Gerd Albrecht, Seiji Ozawa, Michel Plasson, Zdenek Macal, Sylvain Cambreling and Yutako Sado to make their debut on the international scene.
Since its inception, the Festival has also been a key player in the creation and dissemination of contemporary music and since 2004 has been developing an ambitious composer residency project.
