Besançon au siècle des Lumières : à la découverte des hôtels particuliers

After the conquest of Franche-Comté, from the 1720s onwards, Besançon experienced a period of economic stability favourable to urban development. The transfer of the institutions, parliament and university from Dole to Besançon, and the installation of the Intendant in this city, which had become the capital, led to a growth in population, an influx of wealth and the desire, for the wealthiest inhabitants, to build new homes.

This intense building campaign attracted renowned Parisian architects such as Blondel, Boffrand, Chalgrin, etc., and led to the emergence of new talents among local architects.

This chronological tour provides a better understanding of the functional and stylistic evolution of 18th century townhouses in Besançon.
Prices: 8€ -6€ for students, under 18s, members of the Tourist Office (on presentation of card), disabled persons. Free for under 12s and jobseekers.
